Mangrove Alliance for Climate at COP27

The launch of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) Led by the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia, the initiative aims to expand and accelerate the conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems for the benefit of communities around the world. The announcement was made at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) held in Egypt from November 6–18. Five other countries: India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan and Spain have joined the alliance. 

MAC seeks to raise awareness of the role of mangroves as a nature-based solution to climate change and will work through its members to expand and rehabilitate mangrove forests worldwide.

Mangrove forests are among the most productive and ecologically important ecosystems on earth. They offer important co-benefits for climate change mitigation and adaptation by storing carbon up to 400% faster than terrestrial rainforests and protecting coasts from rising sea levels. Sea levels, erosion and storm surges and provide breeding grounds for marine biodiversity. About 80 percent of the world’s fish population depends on healthy mangrove ecosystems. Climate protection at national and international level, which is why we are trying to expand our coverage of mangroves. At COP26, we presented our ambitious goal of planting 100 million mangroves by 2030.

“We are excited to launch MAC alongside Indonesia and believe it will go a long way in advancing collective climate action and restoring blue-carbon ecosystems,” he added.
